Dever Singers

The Dever Singers as we know them today were founded in 1984 to perform at a ‘Village Weekend’ in Micheldever and they were then called the Micheldever Singers. Their name changed when they were joined by a group from Wonston, followed later by another group from South Wonston. The choir then went on to spread throughout the Dever Valley and beyond, therefore the current name appears more appropriate.

The choir has grown considerably in strength since the early days and is now surely one of the best amateur choirs in the area, largely, if not entirely, due to the patience dedication and ability of their Music Director, Colin New. Colin was not only the founder but has remained in that position for over twenty five years, and is still supported by some of the original members. Recently The Choir welcomed Karen Middleton, a very talented young musician, to help Colin as Assistant Director to provide continuity in an ever increasing programme of events.

The Choir welcomes anyone who enjoys singing and is willing to attend regular practices. There are no auditions, although a limited knowledge of music is an obvious advantage. They have a wide range of secular and religious music in their repertoire, which therefore appeals to a broad section of the community and has ensured that their performances are always well supported.

Currently the choir has an active membership of between 30 and 40 the precise number is never static. They are therefore always looking for new members in all voices; there is no particular limit on size. From time to time the choir increases its numbers by collaboration with other choirs for specific events. They are also increasingly requested to perform at local weddings, when sufficient availability of voices is paramount.

There is a small committee that organises the general administration and finances; the current policy is one of expansion without in anyway damaging the amateur and enjoyment status. The choir practices on Thursday evenings from 8.00pm for 2 hours and is privileged to have the facilities of St. Mary’s Church in Micheldever for the majority of these occasions. There are usually two public performances each year, mostly, each at more that one venue
